Masamitsu Yamano Inducted Into Fender Hall of Fame

Fender Musical Instruments inducted Masamitsu Yamano, chairman of Yamano Music, exclusive distributor for Fender products in Japan, into Fender Hall of Fame on August 7. Inaugurated in 2007 at Fender headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, the FHF celebrates people who contributed to the growth of Fender, to inspire all Fender workers to respect those great forerunners and to keep up the established Fender history and tradition.

Long partnership of Yamano Music and Fender started in 1963 when Masamitsu Yamano, then a freshman who just joined Yamano Music Co., flew to U.S and succeeded in concluding exclusive agency agreement with Fender Musical Instruments.

In this context, Masamitsu Yamano's career at Yamano Music coincides with the history involving Yamano Music and Fender. In 1985 their relationship further integrated as Yamano Music offered substantial support for the birth of reorganized Fender.

The industry highly appreciates Yamano Music's intensive quality control policy to protect brand image and value. During the last 25 years, Fender successfully distributed over 900,000 guitars in the Japanese market through Yamano Music. Two years ago, the two companies set up Fender Showcase Tokyo in Gaienmae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, the 2nd marketing promotional center in the world next to Dusseldorf, Germany. It comes in the best completed style not found in sister locations as it has a studio at the site.

Given that Yamano Music's concerted efforts to establish Fender as a brand synonym to sophisticated life style, his Hall of Fame induction looks to be a natural course. The former inductees include late Leo Fender, founder of Fender Guitar, Bill Schultz, ex-chairman, who restructured the once nearly flailed company and such artists as The Beach Boys, James Burton and James Jamerson. Masamitsu Yamano comes as the first inductee from industries outside the Fender circle. The induction will surely strengthen the partnership of the two business leaders.

Yamaha TENORI-ON Joins Permanent Exhibit at MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York recently selected Yamaha's TENORI-ON, a novice musical instrument for its permanent collection of Architecture/Design Division.

The MoMA permanent collection accommodates prominent works and products in the fields of architecture and design representing the modern age from the turn of the 19th century to today.

The Museum has adopted 5 Yamaha products so far with the TC-800GL cassette tape recorder in 1978 as the first. It was followed by the YHL-003 stereo headphone in 1985, the WX7 Wind MIDI Controller in 1989, and the YST-SD90 audio speaker in 1991.

The 5th Music Korea took place for 3 days from September 3 through 5 at Songdo Convensia in Inchon, the 3rd largest city following Seoul and Busan with 2.7 million population.

First launched in 2001, the Music Korea was held every other year, or annually sometimes in Seoul. Last year it moved to Songdo Convensia, Inchon, a 2-hour drive from new Inchon International Airport. As the Korea's first free economic zone, Inchon is rapidly expanding toward an international business center under support of Korean government. When a bridge which links the airport and Songdo area in 40 minutes completes, the transportation of the area to and from central Seoul will dramatically improve.

The 5th exhibition drew 142 exhibitors from 14 countries. Forty five among them were overseas companies mostly from China and Taiwan, and Japan, Myanmar, Canada, England, The Netherlands, and S. Africa set up their pavilions.

Demos and mini concerts staged at individual booths attracted large crowds, however, business activities looked quiet. With lower than expected attendance, the event needs to attract more exhibitors and increase its exposure to grow as an international exhibition.

About the reason why Yamaha Music Korea remains skipping Music Korea. Naoki Yamamori, president, explains. "The largest point is that Inchon is a local city. It's the matter of cost and effectiveness. We are expecting that industry association in Korea is formed, and it's co-staged with Seoul or other larger cities."

He said that saxophone is very popular in Korea, and digital piano and sound products markets are growing. The music and sound market in Korea is very promising with huge worship businesses at its center.

Musical Instruments Fair Association Japan announced an exhibitor roster for the 2009 Musical Instruments Fair Japan which takes place from November 5 through 8 at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama.

As of September 15, a total of 100 companies and 3 industry associations have applied for space.

As with the last Fairs, it co-stages Premium Guitar Show to which 27 music retailers, guitar manufacturers and distributors join, and Outlet Mall where visitors can buy instruments on site.
